By the 1980s the Mott Haven area of the South Bronx became one of the most dangerous, crime riddled neighborhoods in the entire country. It was there that a Puerto Rican gangster named George Calderon rose up in the streets. He ran with a gang named The Cypress Boys led by Money George Gomez and committed stickups, burglaries and murders, earning a fearsome reputation around The Bronx. In the late 80s, he combined forces with his cousin Angel Padilla, who was known as Cuson. After running off Brook Avenue's top dealer named Grande, in 1990 Calderon had formed The C and C Gang which included numerous hoodlums that he had met in prison. C & C oversaw the sale of a heroin brand named D.O.A. (Dead on Arrival) around Brook Ave and charged dealers a street tax in order to operate on their turf. The gang was extremely violent and was responsible for numerous murders of rivals and also handled contract killings.
The day after Thanksgiving in November of 1990, C & C members Thomas "Spanky" Morales and Joey Pillot were involved in a shooting at The Palladium night club which resulted in a bouncer being killed. Two innocent men named David Lemus and Olmedo Hidalgo would be charged with the shootings.
Calderon and Cuson became extremely feared in Mott Haven and controlled the drug trade around East 139th street, Brook Avenue and St. Ann's Avenue for years.
