When the UK leaves the EU, it must also leave the free trade agreements it currently has with over 60 countries outside the EU. The UK government intends to roll over these agreements so that they continue to apply, known as grandfathering.
However, because of Rules of Origin and clauses in some of these agreements, it’s not likely to be a simple cut out ‘EU’ and paste in ‘UK’ job. This video explains why rolling over these agreements is likely to be highly complicated, and will necessarily impact on trade.
Further information is on this subject is also presented in a UK Trade Policy Observatory blog by Dr Michael Gasiorek and Dr Peter Holmes : blogs.sussex.ac.uk/uktpo/2017/09/27/grandfathering-ftas-and-roos/
