Alcohol withdrawal is a dangerous syndrome that can potentially kill. What leads to this syndrome is the downregulation of GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid) — an inhibitory (calming) neurotransmitter in the brain and a spike in excitatory neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and glutamate. A nasty situation indeed. True delirium tremens is not to be confused with garden-variety alcohol withdrawal or alcoholic hallucinosis.

True D.T.s are likely to land you in the ICU and are fairly rare. According to WebMD, the odds of its occurrence are 15% and the mortality rate if left untreated is around 37%; with early treatment, the percentage drops to 5%, according to Facty Health.
