The Queensland Railways BB18¼ Class represents the final and most advanced generation of mainline passenger steam locomotives built for Queensland’s narrow-gauge railway network. Introduced between 1950 and 1958, these locomotives served as a bridge between the steam era and the transition to diesel traction in Australia.

The classification “BB18¼” reflects Queensland Railways’ system of naming locomotives: BB indicates a 4-6-2 Pacific-type locomotive with two cylinders. And the 18¼ refers to the diameter of the cylinders, measured at 18¼ inches (about 464 mm).

The BB18¼ locomotives were designed for passenger and mixed-traffic duties, and they became a common sight across Queensland’s main lines. They were frequently used on routes linking Brisbane, Toowoomba, Rockhampton, and beyond, providing reliable service on both express and regional trains. Known for their smooth running, ample power, and comfortable ride, the BB18¼ Class quickly earned a reputation as one of Queensland’s most successful steam locomotive designs.

With the widespread introduction of diesel locomotives in the 1960s and 1970s, the BB18¼ Class was gradually withdrawn from service. Fortunately, several locomotives were preserved, with a few maintained in operational condition for excursion and heritage services. Notable examples include:
