Do lens designers design a lens from scratch? Not really. But here, I show at least one example of how a simple Cooke triplet can be roughly designed from a blank screen. This is not always how it's done, but it gives you a flavor of one way a designer can begin from scratch and work out the lens curvatures roughly and manually, then perform some simple optimizations to reach a reasonable state of performance.
