Dr. Madhu Sasidhar introduces Dr. Rooma Sinha—one of India’s foremost experts in robotic gynaecology, with 30+ years of experience, Associate Professor at Macquarie University (Australia), President of the Asian Society of Gynaecological Robotic Surgeons, author of 70+ publications, multiple US & European fellowships, and India’s first proctor for Intuitive Surgical. Known for her mentorship and compassion, Dr. Sinha shares her remarkable journey.

Coming from a family of engineers, Dr. Sinha was inspired to pursue medicine by the human decisions behind care. She speaks about mentorship as total knowledge-sharing—helping the next generation grow further than their teachers.

Encouraging women surgeons, she says: “Put on blinders. Stay focused. Ignore limitations others place on you—determination defines excellence.”

Initially reluctant to choose gynaecology, she soon discovered its depth as a surgical specialty. Beginning her career in a male-dominated laparoscopic field, she worked through challenges and now dedicates herself to training young surgeons.

Her robotic surgery journey began in 2012 when Apollo introduced surgical robotics. Though once considered unnecessary for benign gynaecology, robotics transformed her practice. For complex hysterectomies, fibroids, and endometriosis, she now believes robotics prevents the need for open surgery—offering precision even for high-risk patients facing obesity, diabetes, or severe disease.

Using 3D uterine modelling, Dr. Sinha maps fibroids before surgery, improving surgical completeness and fertility preservation. She explains how robotics enhances surgical performance with 3D vision, tremor filtering, motion scaling, and surgeon-controlled cameras—amplifying expertise without replacing the surgeon.

Beyond the operating room, she enjoys travel, cooking, and evenings at home with music—her husband is a singer.

As President of the Asian Society, she leads efforts in safe training and structured certification across India and Asia. Gynaecological robotic surgeries in India grew fivefold between 2022–2024, driven by these initiatives.
