As requested by _JustSomeGuy_, here's another Contrapunctus from Bach's The Art of Fugue.
The Art of Fugue was the last large-scale project that Bach was working on. In fact, he died in the middle of its composition, leaving it incomplete. The purpose of this piece here isn't clear, but it's commonly thought that it was meant as a massive "textbook" for those studying fugue composition, as well as a final summation of the genre of which Bach was a supreme master. Even if he didn't live long enough to finish it, the body of music found in this compendium is astonishing and worth nearly a lifetime of study.
The work consists of a series of fugues all based on a single subject. They're of increasing complexity, employing more advanced techniques and transforming the subject itself as it goes along, all with the purpose of showing us how much material one can get from a single source.
The second Contrapunctus is, like the first one, a four-voice fugue once again, except this time with the theme enlivened by a "French-style" dotted rhythm. This simple change is enough to broaden the fugue's possibilities quite significantly, as Bach makes sure to let us know.
