🍇🍷Azerbaijan's wine traditions go back more than 5000 years, so you can be sure that the country has a knack for winemaking. The country has become an increasingly popular wine tourism destination in recent years, and in 2021 the European Institute of Cultural Routes recognized its achievements in the category “Best Cross-Border Wine Tourism Product”.
It's easy to see for yourself: you need to come to the annual festival, wine and grapes in Chamakh - which is being held for the third time. It is held in Meysari village of Shamakhi district, known for its viticulture traditions. Varieties of Azerbaijani grapes - ag shani, gara shani, madrasi, meyseri, tebrizi and others - have glorified our country as a land of winemaking and viticulture not only in the Soviet Union, but also in the whole world.
The choice of Shamakhi as the venue of the festival is not accidental. Shamakhi, which has been the birthplace of poetry and music since ancient times, is also known as one of the regions of Azerbaijan where viticulture was developed, as the capital of the country's winemaking.
It is envisioned that more than a thousand people will visit the festival daily, including wine producers, representatives of the wine tourism (enotourism) industry, officials and journalists.
The State Tourism Agency promotes wine tourism at the international level, taking into account the presence of internationally recognized local grape and wine varieties in Azerbaijan. In the western, northern and north-western tourist routes in our country, including in Tug village of Khojavand district, preservation of ancient traditions of winemaking and their utilization for tourism purposes are among the main directions of development.
Azerbaijan is a member of the Iter Vitis Wine Route, which includes wine routes of 20 countries, created by the Council of Europe and the European Institute of Cultural Routes to promote wine heritage and enotourism, as well as sustainable tourism.
Connoisseurs of the noble beverage will find pavilions of local wine producers, interesting presentations, wine tours, wine tasting in a vintage cellar and master classes from winemakers and sommeliers. And the Meysari specialty store will offer local wines, organic local products and original souvenirs.
The festival in Shamakhi is not only a holiday for wine connoisseurs, but also a great opportunity to have an interesting vacation in nature with the whole family.
In special ethno-corner tourists will see how the masters of copper craft, carpet weaving, national stained glass Shebeke, potters and other folk artisans work. On improvised concert stages there are performances of musicians and dancers, puppet and theatrical performances, and joking quizzes and fun contests will cheer up both adults and children.
Fans of gastronomic delights can try various dishes of national cuisine, to which “Meysari” wines will perfectly match, or drink a glass or two of fragrant Azerbaijani tea with traditional sweets in cozy gazebos by the lake.
