Bondi is getting a makeover! Check out the brand-new, two-way separated cycleway on Curlewis Street, part of a major streetscape upgrade by Waverley Council and the NSW Government. This project is all about making Bondi safer, greener, and more vibrant for everyone!
The new 700-metre path provides a crucial link for active transport, connecting Bondi Beach to the Rose Bay ferry and wider Eastern Suburbs cycle networks. Whether you're a local resident, a daily commuter, or a tourist exploring the area, this upgrade makes cycling a safe and enjoyable option.
Key Features of the Upgrade:
Separated two-way bike path from Campbell Parade to Wellington Street.
New shared paths at the western end of Curlewis Street (between Old South Head Road and Wellington Street).
Raised pedestrian crossings with designated bike lanes at Gould and Wellington streets for improved safety.
Enhanced streetscape with 60 new trees, new paving, lighting, and improved outdoor dining areas.
Better connectivity to the wider Eastern Harbour City strategic cycle network.
The project has been funded through the Transport for NSW Get NSW Active program, demonstrating a commitment to creating safer and more accessible active transport options across Sydney.
Project Status (as of late 2025):
✅ Stages 1 & 2 (including the Campbell Parade intersection) are officially open!
🚧 Stages 3 & 5 are currently in progress, expected to be finalized by the end of 2025.
We appreciate the community's patience as we work to transform the entrance to Bondi Beach!

🌐 Addendum: New South Head Road & O'Sullivan Road Connections
The Curlewis Street cycleway is designed to link into the broader network, including connections that lead toward Rose Bay. Here’s the latest on how those connections work:
Crossing Old South Head Road:
The Curlewis Street project features new shared paths at its western end, leading to the complex intersection with Old South Head Road, Birriga Road, and O'Sullivan Road. Bicycle NSW has highlighted the importance of a safe crossing here to reach O'Sullivan Road and continue the journey toward the Rose Bay ferry.
The O'Sullivan Road & New South Head Road Crossing:
O'Sullivan Road: A "pop-up" cycleway was planned for O'Sullivan Road (from Old South Head Road to New South Head Road) to be a two-way separated path located between the kerb and parking spaces. This provides the final link to reach New South Head Road.
New South Head Road Crossing: This is a major intersection. Transport for NSW recently completed safety improvement work here in April-May 2025, which involved upgrading traffic signals and installing red turn arrows to increase protection for pedestrians and potentially cyclists.
Rose Bay Cycleway: Once across New South Head Road, you connect to the existing 2.4km Rose Bay Cycleway, which runs from William Street, Double Bay to Norwich Road, Rose Bay. This cycleway is a mix of shared paths and a separated bi-directional cycleway along the promenade, allowing cyclists to ride safely away from general car traffic to the ferry wharf.
These connections fulfill the vision of a continuous active transport link from Bondi Beach to the Rose Bay ferry.
