In this video, I hike to gorgeous Shangri-La Falls in the Bankhead National Forest of North Alabama. The trail to the falls is short, about 1 mile (1.6 km), and other than a very steep descent of about 100 ft (30 m) right before the falls, very easy.
The trail starts out in a controlled fire burn area, but once you drop into the Collier Creek Canyon, things become extraordinarily beautiful. The falls themselves are a lovely single plunge into a beautiful blue splash pool that just beckons you to go for a swim.
Being that this was a cold spring day, I opted to try and stay dry by hopping from rock to rock and finding my way around ever increasingly difficult obstacles as I went up the canyon. Had it been a warmer day, I would have just walked up the creek itself and things would have been much easier.
I did not reach my ultimate goal of Collier Creek Falls, but I did stop and eat lunch at a very pretty unnamed waterfall along the way.
After lunch, I went back out the way I came in, once again passing Shangri-La Falls, then climbing up the steep canyon wall back to the plateau where I walked through the fire burn back to the car.
This is a simply gorgeous waterfall hike, that I’d recommend to anyone who is brave enough to slide down that steep part into the canyon (hint — hold onto the trees!).
