It's been a strange time of disruption for all of us this past year. But I guess there has been some benefits. Many of us have actually used the slowness as an opportunity to be more present and more perceptive of the natural world around us. The birds and bees have simply carried on whilst human kind has been disrupted in our material endeavours. The seasons have continued to pass their baton each to the next entirely unaffected. I'm reminded of the words in Matthews gospel - 'Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns' and 'See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.'
Yes, there is a very good challenge from this pandemic experience. Did we pause to consider what is worthy of our worry and concern? And indeed what we 'seek first'?
I hope that this next few months, as our freedoms and opportunities are gradually returned to us, that we somehow, somewhere, have learned something about the joy we could experience in the quiet, in the slow, in nature.
Life and living isn't a destination, nor is it government announced date. Life is right now, and life was every minute of this last year.
I hope we've learned to be present and more able to find joy even in the times of preparation, in the times of 'not yet', and perhaps even at times when the absence of loved ones stays with you as an unshakeable empty void in your heart.
Take a break from planning and waiting. Take a minute and just 'be'. Perhaps you will feel the presence of 'The Mystic'.
