A conversation for clowns, actors and actresses, theatre students, theatre
directors, playwrights and other people close or far from the world of
Clowns.
What determines whether something is funny or not? What is the nature
of the comical? Why can we laugh at some things and not at others?
Is there a specific dramaturgy for clowns?
“When I started working as a clown and in the world of humour, my main
goal was to get the audience to laugh. I couldn’t tolerate more than forty-
fiie seconds without a laugh, and if that happened I thought that
everything was going wrong and the show was falling apart. This need of
mine to hear laughter almost constantly made for very funny shows
because they were put together by placing one gag after another and
another and another. It took me many years to understand that in this way
I was missing out on exploring and exploiting other deeper variables,
especially the poetry that can be found in the world of clowns.”
Hernán Gené.
