Camaro (P0449 and P0496) EVAP Emissions (Canister) Vent Solenoid and Valve

If you are thinking of replacing your EVAP Emissions Vent Solenoid to correct a P0449 CEL, this video is for you. This is a technically simple, but physically challenging repair that can be done, but you can save a lot of time by understanding the challenges before starting.

The video has two parts. Part I covers the EVAP PURGE VALVE which is often associated with the P0496 code. This is a component in the engine compartment that can be changed with not tools (a flathead screwdriver may be helpful) in about 10 minutes. Anyone can do this, if they want to save some money.

Part 2 covers the P0449 code which could entail replacing the EVAP Emissions (Canister) Vent Solenoid. I say "could" because it could also be related to the actual wiring harness and possibly other things, but my research showed that most often it is the solenoid. In my case, it was. I replaced the solenoid, cleared the code and it has not reappeared.

This latter project is much more challenging than the former. You will need an assistant, jack stand, eye protection, a 14" flat head screw drivers or similar and some "long" pliers or a small vice grip or similar. No "exotic" tools are needed, but patience and perseverance are required.

Safety is important. If you attempt the P0449 fix, you will be under the car a lot. It took me almost two hours to do this repair, because I did not have any real understanding of what needed to be done. The other videos that I saw showed me where the part was, but not really how to get it disconnected, removed and replaced. This is partly because the space does not permit a camera. So, this video is a bit unorthodox. We will use "car video" where possible and photos and demonstrations everywhere else. Bottom line, if I had seen this video before starting, it would have gone a lot faster and been less frustrating.
