Around the world, power systems are increasingly incorporating inverter-based resources (IBRs). As synchronously connected generating units are displaced by these new resources, the short-timescale frequency regulation services traditionally provided through kinetic energy of synchronous machines are becoming more scarce, with important implications for a system’s ability to respond appropriately to frequency disturbances. Power system operators have identified a need to track the potential response of a system to a contingency event as system conditions change in real-time to inform unit dispatch decisions that meet grid security constraints while integrating higher shares of IBRs.
This webinar summarizes G-PST’s forthcoming publication reviewing the state of the art, emerging trends, and future directions in inertia needs assessment and real-time monitoring around the world. It also features experiences in inertia management from the South African system operator, Eskom, and highlights a recent collaboration between Eskom and the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to develop an open source framework for real-time inertia monitoring.
