Gerhard Laible is a German fly tier who wrote the first book fully on CDC in 1993 called CDC Flies. He is famous for using a dubbing loop, "paper clips" to tie in CDC.
He fell in love with CDC with the Moustique but found it difficult to obtain feathers with enough fiber density and thin stems to make the Moutique the way he wanted. He first experimented with tying in clumps of fibers. I show this technique in the first part of the video.
He later learned from Robert Pfandl how to use "paper clips" to add fur, feather fibers into a dubbing loop and to spin that into a "hackle". This technique in Germany became known as "Pfandlen". Laible expanded it to CDC with much success and created many patterns over the years. He ended up being a big influence and mentor to Marc Petitjean. Both men eventually created there own set of tools for these loops and successfully marketed them to fly tiers.
In this video we do the "beginners" pattern for using this method...a simple palmered pattern.
Enjoy!
