How to Stop Feedback on your Speaker from your Microphone

To stop or reduce feedback using just a *mixer* and **gain control**, follow these steps:

1. *Set Proper Gain Structure*
Start with the *gain (trim) knob* at the lowest setting.
Slowly increase gain while speaking or playing sound until it reaches an optimal level—loud enough but not peaking (watch the meter levels).
Avoid setting gain too high, as excessive gain is a primary cause of feedback.

2. *Lower the Master or Channel Volume*
If feedback starts, *reduce the master volume* slightly.
If a specific mic is causing feedback, lower its *channel fader* or **gain**.

3. *Use EQ to Cut Problem Frequencies*
Most mixers have *High, Mid, and Low EQ knobs* on each channel.
Feedback often occurs in the *midrange* (250Hz–4kHz) or *highs* (above 4kHz).
Slightly lower (turn counterclockwise) the mid or high EQ to reduce feedback.
Some mixers have a **sweepable mid EQ**—use it to pinpoint and cut the problem frequency.

4. *Position Mics and Speakers Correctly*
*Avoid pointing microphones at speakers.*
Keep speakers *in front* of mics, not behind or to the side.

6. *Reduce Open Microphones*
If multiple microphones are on, mute the ones not in use.
