Abby and Newe are two animal rights activists united by the shared goal of a vegan world. However, their strategies differ—Abby is an abolitionist, while Newe is a new welfarist. Which strategy is more effective?
In an experiment using chatbots to simulate advocacy conversations, I found that the new welfarist strategy tended to trigger fewer negative reactions and stronger intentions to reduce animal product consumption.
But does that mean Newe's approach is always the better choice? Not necessarily! Further analysis revealed key psychological factors that influenced the success of the abolitionist strategy and people's willingness to eliminate—not just reduce—animal product consumption.
This session will explore these findings and discuss how they can inform more effective advocacy strategies.
