Femoroacetabular impingement or FAI is a condition where the bones of your hip joint come too close and pinch tissue or cause too much friction. The friction is seen around the labrum of the hip socket thanks to the close proximity of the femoral head to the acetabulum.
The symptoms are:
Clicking or locking around the hip joint
Pain located near the groin area
Pain after sitting for long periods of time
Difficulty putting your socks on
Pain when walking up hills
Now you might be wondering how is FAI different from hip flexor strain?
This is what you need to know in order to tell the difference - does the pain happen when going through a motion like a squat. A muscular strain will often bring out pain when you put a force through when it's forced to contract like when coming out of a deep squat.
To determine whether or not you have FAI you will need to have either an MRI or CAT scan done.
What are the next steps after you have been diagnosed with FAI?
Physical therapy is the smartest option here as you will need to strengthen the hip not follow a stretch program. This is a very important step especially if you are looking at returning to running.
Now I have stated this before, once you are ready to be discharged from PT and have the “green” light to run again, get a gait analysis done along with getting fitted for sneakers. The gait analysis will help uncover any other muscle imbalances or weakness that may still be present. This will make a big difference and it’s a great preventive measure.
Getting new sneakers is another recommendation as you might want more cushion in the insole of the shoe to help with shock absorption. Depending on what the gait analysis shows will help in determining which sneaker is best for you.
On a side note I would increase my protein intake to help reduce inflammation build up along taking turmeric.
Let me know if you have experienced this and what has worked for you👇
