There is a tree growing in alleyways right now that contains more iron than a steak, more antioxidants than blueberries, and 5x more resveratrol than red wine. It powered the Silk Road for centuries and in 1839, speculation on its value nearly destroyed the US economy.

Today, planting it is a criminal offense in Tucson, Las Vegas, and El Paso.

This is the story of the Everbearing Mulberry (Morus rubra x alba), the biological powerhouse that produces too much food for the suburbs to handle, and why the "fruitless" alternative created a public health disaster.

🔬 THE SCIENCE:

Nutritional profiling reveals the mulberry is a mineral anomaly. According to USDA data and analysis by Ercisli & Orhan (2007):
Iron Content: 2.6mg per cup (14% DV) vs 0.4mg in blueberries (2% DV). That is a 650% increase.
Vitamin C: 36mg per 100g vs 9.7mg in blueberries (3.5x higher).
Protein: Mulberries contain ~1.5% protein by fresh weight (double most berries) and 12% by dried weight, making them a survival macronutrient source.

The "French Paradox" credits red wine’s heart benefits to resveratrol. However, grapes concentrate resveratrol only in the skin (~5-10 micrograms/gram). Research by Zhang et al. (2008) indicates whole mulberries can contain upwards of 50 micrograms per gram—5x the concentration of grapes—without the alcohol.

Botanically, the "Illinois Everbearing" variety (discovered by Peter Glaser in 1947) defies the standard two-week fruiting window. It produces fresh berries continuously from June through September, bridging the "summer hunger gap" that affects other fruit trees.

💰 THE SUPPRESSION:

The disappearance of the mulberry is a story of logistics and law, not flavor.

The Logistics: A ripe mulberry has a shelf life of 48 hours. It is so thin-skinned it bursts under its own weight in a shipping crate, and the stem stays attached (unlike raspberries), preventing mechanical harvest. It is "commercially unviable" for the industrial supply chain.

The Law: In the 1950s, the shift to manicured suburbs branded the mulberry a "trash tree" due to staining fruit.
Tucson, AZ banned planting in 1984.
Las Vegas, NV banned planting in 1991.
El Paso, TX banned planting in 1992.

To avoid the mess, nurseries sold "fruitless" male clones. This backfired catastrophically. Male trees produce massive clouds of pollen, turning the Southwest into an allergy epicenter. We banned the food to save the sidewalk, and poisoned the air instead.

In the 1830s, the "Morus Multicaulis Mania" saw mulberry saplings trading for the modern equivalent of $500 in a silk-production bubble. When the market crashed in 1839, millions of trees were burned by angry investors. The survivors hybridized with native trees to become the "weeds" we ignore today.
