Sri Lanka has some stunning sand dunes, particularly in the coastal town of Kalpitiya.
Located in the northwest of the country, Kalpitiya is home to a long stretch of coastline dotted with pristine beaches and sand dunes. The dunes in Kalpitiya are among the tallest in the country, reaching up to 50 feet in height. These impressive sand hills are constantly shifting and changing shape due to the wind and weather.
One of the most breathtaking spots to see the sand dunes in Kalpitiya is at Alankuda, in front of the Dune Towers resort. Here, you can climb to the top of the sand dunes and take in the stunning panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and the surrounding coastline.
Additionally, the beach that is part of the sand dune area in front of the Dune Towers resort is a nesting ground for sea turtles. From January to March, these gentle giants lay their eggs in the sand, and visitors can witness this incredible natural phenomenon.
