In this video I offer a close reading of Book 1 of Homer's Iliad, the story of Troy. I begin with a brief discussion of the Olympian gods and the meaning of some of the central terms (names and places) in the Iliad that you need to know. I then proceed to work through the meaning of what happens in Book 1 -- often requiring a line-by-line analysis. Book 1 is one of the most critical Books in the poem because it establishes the subject matter of the story to be told (i.e., the anger of Achilleus), the nature of the song (the poet understands himself as the mouthpiece or instrument of the divine song that he transmits), the context of the story (the tenth year of the war between the Achaians and Trojans), and core values (rooted in the struggle for honour and power in both the human and divine worlds) that control the logic of the narrative until its conclusion.
