From Hell: The Chilling Saga of Jack the Ripper Explained

In the autumn of 1888, London was shaken by five gruesome murders that took place in its infamous Whitechapel district. Ostensibly perpetrated by “Jack the Ripper”, a nom de guerre adopted in a series of letters that the alleged killer wrote to the erstwhile press and police, the “Whitechapel Murders” have served as the blueprint for our modern understanding of serial murders in both brutality and public fascination. The victims were five sex-workers whose killer was never apprehended despite the concerted efforts of Scotland Yard and the collective attention of the London milieu. These unsolved murders gave birth to a veritable cottage industry of conspiracy theories, many of them incriminating several contemporary historical figures and invoking royal involvement. Pulling from the strings of one such theory, author Alan Moore and artist Eddie Campbell crafted the inimitable graphic novel, From Hell, the subject of our retrospective today.
So, without further ado, let us journey back to the murky streets of Whitechapel as the nineteenth century draws to a close and Jack the Ripper inaugurates the twentieth century with blood.
