THE MANED WOLVES PUPS TURN TWO MONTHS OLD
In Iberá, northeastern Argentina, we conduct an unprecedented project to monitor two pairs of maned wolves with GPS technology. With the aid of radio collars, we are learning about the intimacy of Malevo, Preta, and their cubs, including how they use the territory, something little known for this species in the Iberá Wetlands.
During the first and a half months, the adults moved their cubs between 30 and 50 meters—sometimes 200—every three to four days. Now two months old, the pups move on their own in a 300-meter radius, where they have made burrows. Further, four out of five pups survived—a good number for a species with low survival rates during the first months of life.
South America’s largest canid has great ambassadors growing up in Iberá, who are producing crucial data to increase our knowledge about the reproductive behavior of wild maned wolves, which today is scarce.
