Den Grundstein für das Jugendzentrum legte 1966 der berühmte Kosmonaut und Raumfahrtpionier Juri Gagarin, nach welchem der Gebäudekomplex bei der Eröffnung 1972 dann auch benannt wurde. Ein Ort der Freizeitgestaltung, auch für internationales Publikum, war das Jugendzentrum bis zum Ende der Sowjetunion 1991. Es umfasste einen Saal für politische Veranstaltungen, einen Konzertsaal, Hotelzimmer für Jugendliche aus anderen Warschauer Pakt Staaten, eine grosse Bibliothek, sowie zahlreiche Räume für kreative Tätigkeiten und Sport. Angeblich wurde bei einem Workshop die erste Energiesparlampe der Sowjetunion erfunden. Nach der Privatisierung 1991 zog eine Discothek ein, die um den Jahrtausendwechsel schliessen musste. Seitdem steht der Komplex leer. Das grosse Mosaik "Plowman Of The Universe" steht unter Denkmalschutz und muss bei einer eventuellen Nachnutzung erhalten bleiben.

The foundation stone for the youth center was laid in 1966 by the famous cosmonaut and space pioneer Yuri Gagarin, after whom the building complex was named at its opening in 1972. The youth center served as a recreational venue, also for an international audience, until the end of the Soviet Union in 1991. It included a hall for political events, a concert hall, hotel rooms for young people from other Warsaw Pact countries, a large library, and numerous rooms for creative activities and sports. The Soviet Union's first energy-saving light bulb was allegedly invented at a workshop. After privatization in 1991, a discotheque moved in, which had to close around the turn of the millennium. The complex has stood empty ever since. The large mosaic "Plowman of the Universe" is a listed monument and must be preserved if it is to be reused.
