The Heron and the Geisha is a short documentary about Yoshie Tachibana, Grandmaster of Traditional Japanese Dance and head of the Tachibana School of Japanese Dance. The film premiered at the Rhode Island International Film Festival in August 2010.
The documentary offers a rare and intimate look into the world of traditional Japanese arts. Viewers are taken inside a kabuki theater wig maker’s workshop, a kimono shop, and the studio of a craftsman who has dedicated his lifetime to making traditional stage footwear (tabi) for performers.
Featuring stunning dance performances and rare backstage footage filmed at the National Theatre of Japan, The Heron and the Geisha places Japanese dance at the center of a constellation of traditional arts in Tokyo, Japan.
