Hi there. In this video, I'm going to tell you all about round nose pliers, how to use them, how to choose them, and how to get the best results.

Round nose pliers are an essential jewelry making tool. If you're going to be doing any sort of wire work making loops and coils you will need a pair of round nose pliers. Now the way these differ from other pliers is that their tips, rather than having flat surfaces that meet, are both long tapered cone shapes. And they do meet together. Some round nose pliers come as these do with a cutting edge on the inside which can be handy. And then there's also this flat portion that can be used. The round nose pliers that I have here are just over half an inch long and four millimeters wide at the widest part of the cone. But you can find other round nose pliers such as the ones pictured here that have much longer tips and they'll be much wider at the base. So it all depends on what you're going to do.

So round nose pliers are usually used for making loops and let me show you a quick and easy way to make a loop. You want to hold your pliers in your hand with your palm up and the pliers parallel to your work surface. Place your wire in the jaws of your plier wherever it is that you want the width of your loop to be. I've actually used a caliper here and a fine point Sharpie to mark on my round nose pliers where the two millimeter point is because I like my loops to be about two millimeters.

Now you want to make sure that your wire isn't sticking up so that you can't feel it right here when you rub your finger across the jaws. And then you just twist your wrist towards you, loosen your grip on the pliers, go back, clamp down again on the wire, and twist your wrist again. And now you've made a loop which you can bend back on itself to center over the wire. And essentially I've just made my own eye pin here. If you wanted to make coils of wire you can do that with round nose pliers. Again position the wire where you want the size of your coil to be and just grip and twist, and grip and twist. And so as you're coiling it doesn't matter that your pliers are tapered because you're feeding the coil up over the narrow part of the tapered tips and you can get a nice, even coil.

So since round nose pliers are such an essential part of the jewelry maker's tool kit, make sure that you buy the best quality that you can afford. Find a pair that fits comfortably in your hand that's easy to grip so that you don't get any hand fatigue and you'll enjoy using them for years to come.
