Here's an update on how my lawn is looking after the recent chafer grub infestation. Plus I also give a few tips on dealing with grubs in your lawn that I haven't mentioned much before.
While Chafer grubs are simply part of nature, your lawn will naturally tolerate a few grubs so do not be too alarmed if you see one or two.
The issue comes when the infestation is quite large. You will start to see stressed brown areas in the lawn during Summer.. and these can easily be mistaken for drought stress, but would be in fact as a result of the White fleshy grubs chewing the grass roots right up to the surface.
Once a grub has eaten a root it will move to the side and begin eating the next root.
So even with this your lawn may suffer BUT may come good again come winter.. once the grubs have gone deeper in the ground (due to the cold weather).. then as the lawn begins to develop new roots it will regain its health. So it's important to keep it well watered when your having an infestation to help the grass grow new roots.
The main issue comes when birds become aware. they will be able to lift the turf (like a carpet) to get to the roots. This leaves the lawn unable to recover as the turf has been overturned or pulled to pieces.
At this stage it would be necessary to reseed.
Please watch the video for a couple of extra tips using a grub pheromone lure, and a sheet of thick black plastic.
