Turkish Fashion: Talent Amidst Chaos | Documentary

Turkey is a country with a rich fashion history and culture. It is known as a producer country with factories that manufacture the clothes of some of the biggest fashion brands in the world. Despite this, there isn’t much coverage on the fashion scene within Turkey. This documentary focuses on the fashion creatives and professionals specifically in Istanbul, Turkey. Turkish fashion designers have to jump over so many hurdles to achieve success – earthquakes, natural disasters, political unrest, a very volatile currency and more – yet, they persevere and see the positives in life.

As a Nigerian that grew up in Nigeria, I have always had an outsider’s view on the fashion industry. Fashion week is glamourised and the most famous shows take place in New York, Paris, Milan and London. Even when fashion history is discussed, the designers mentioned tend to almost always be from Italy, France, USA, or the United Kingdom. It is as though the promotion of global fashion was erased to promote a narrative of western fashion supremacy. This is inherently the problem with the way fashion is covered. The purpose of this documentary is to start a series of films that cover fashion in regions of the world that are not covered extensively by western fashion media. Fashion is a global industry, and the coverage of fashion should represent this. With time, the ultimate goal is to create a space that people visit to watch content about regions that they will not see on any other western media platform.
