UPDATE: In the years the importance of Sylvia Anderson in the creation of these shows has been severely underlit and gone underappreciated. While I cannot change the video anymore it should be noted that this video should've read Gerry and Sylvia Anderson Influences in Hideaki Anno's Evangelion.
You know one of those feelings you have when you think "Hey... is this inspired by this?" and you go on-line and just post about it with your unsubstaniated claims? Well... prepare to get substantiated!
Launch Sequence: In a 2014 interview by MangaUK Hideaki Anno confirmed that launch sequences and the headquarters of NERV were based on SHADO Headquarters and Tracy Island.
Retractable Buildings: While Anno doesn't quite mention Stingray, it does make sense for this to be a reference.
Breathable Water: Out of all of these, I think this one is a stretch.
Fuyutsuki and Gendo's design and costume: Eva character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto has confirmed in an interview in the Der Mond artbook that Gendo and Fuyutsuki were modeled after Commander Ed Staker and Colonel Alec Freeman from UFO.
Similar Suitcase: This is way too similar to be a co-incidence.
Similar Date: An injoke from Otaku no Video, a 1991 pseudo-documentary anime about the history of Studio Gainax and Japanese otaku in general. In it was the text: "September 13, 1999: An accidental explosion occurs at the Nuclear Waste Disposal Facility on the far side of the Moon" as a joke. For Evangelion they changed the year from 1999 to 2000.
Name drop: Even the rank is correct. This is very likely a reference.
Similar vehicles: While the SHADO CONTROL is maybe a bit of a stretch, the font and naming scheme's seem to match. The Eagle Transporter and the spaceship Gendo and Fuyutsuki are in are pretty much unmistakable though.
Flashing text and similar editing: While I cannot find any official confirmation... The amount of things coming from UFO does lead one to believe that this is also a reference or inspiration.
