Giulio Regondi (1822-72) was a cosmopolitan by birth, born in Switzerland to a German mother and an Italian father. A child prodigy, he toured Paris and London at nine years old, around the same time that Paganini (who was 40 years older) made his legendary appearances across Europe. Regondi’s compositions, including a fantasy on Mozart’s Don Giovanni and variations on a theme by Bellini, belong to the light and entertaining salon style of the mid-19th century. Although he is best known for his guitar music, as a teenager Regondi took up the concertina, an accordion-like instrument that had been invented by the scientist Charles Wheatstone in 1829. Later in his life he abandoned the guitar in order to perform extensively on the concertina, for which he also composed a number of works.
Performed Friday November 3, 2017 in Field Concert Hall, Philadelphia, PA
