Lawrence Washington was George Washington's older half brother. He was also one of the primary founders of Alexandria! In 1743, Lawrence inherited a property south of Alexandria that was situated next to Little Hunting Creek. Lawrence renamed the Little Hunting Creek plantation after his former commander, a Navy admiral, who was referred to affectionately as "Old Grog." However, Lawrence decided to use the commander's real name.
In this video, we talk about George's older brother Lawrence Washington, who is a lesser known historic figure. We cover why Lawrence should be considered one of the key founders of Alexandria. We also discuss his ownership of Mount Vernon!
