combat strategy:
this style, teaches "feinting" tactics. opening opponent's guard is not only possible with the brute force of opening moves, but there are subtle tactics to do it not or barely moving and without force:
tactic 21 - 'eye feint':
"point mulberry, curse the locust (指桑骂槐)" – look somewhere while your move goes somewhere else.
tactic 22 - 'move feint':
"beat grasses to startle the snake (打草惊蛇)" – feint by shaking a limb to startle the opponent and disrupt his position, whether defensive or offensive.
tactic 23 - 'direction feint':
"feint eastward, attack westward (声东击西)" – feint to a direction, but attack the opposite. feint to the left, attack right, feint down, attack up, etc.
tactic 24 - 'multiple feints':
"nothing becomes something (无中生有)" – if the opponent reacts to a move, let it be a feint, if he doesn't react, make it a real attack. so there may be multiple feints before an actual attack.
these involve abrupt moves and changing directions by various parts of the body. in this style, every move abruptly changes direction or is followed by another limb which moves abruptly in another direction, which with the eyes straying around, make it impossible for the opponent to distinguish between real and fake, teaching you how to open opponent's guard effortlessly without a real move in any situation.

history:
Qing dynasty (1644-1912):
in the early 1800s, monk Zhan Ju (湛举) created the 'sunward form' (朝阳拳: chao yang quan, which also means the morning sun) based on a combination of various other styles. he later improved the overall strategical level of the form and renamed it to 'bright sun form' (zhao yang quan, which also means the noon sun, which is brighter than the morning sun).

note: there are some other forms and styles named 'chaoyang' and 'zhaoyang' in the Chaoyang and Zhaoyang regions of China, and they are historically and technically different from Shaolin zhaoyang quan. these are just different styles with similar names.
