In 2022 RCAF's 103 Search and Rescue Squadron based out of Gander, Newfoundland was tasked to look for survivors of a fishing trawler that had just sunk.
103 flies the CH-149 Cormorant Helicopter. The conditions of the day were strong winds (40-50kts), large waves(5m/15'), and reduced visibility at times (1/2 SM)
The search area was approximately 300nm out to sea. in order to, not only make it to the search area, but to extend search time as well the Cormorant would refuel at one of the oil rigs on the Hibernia Oil Field. This oil platform is classified as an FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading). That is to say it floats and as such it goes up and down with the waves. This platform was approximately 225nm out to sea.
103 Sqn does not conduct such landings very often. In fact, this was the flying pilot's first time doing it. So we took our time.
If you have questions or comments I will do my best to answer them maybe in the form of another video.
