A Flight Down the River Mersey to Liverpool Waterfront:

Liverpool’s waterfront is famous across the UK and around the world, in the past due to its many maritime visitors but these days due to the large number of tourists who visit Liverpool each year. The outstanding architecture, such as the iconic Royal Liver Building and the other two ‘Graces’ on the waterfront are spectacular and in recent years there has been much development, which has mostly been great to see after years of economic hardship in the city towards the end of the last century. Much of the development came as a result of Liverpool being the European Capital of Culture in 2008. The Albert Dock is now one of the biggest tourist attractions in the UK.

This marked Liverpool’s shift from being an industrial port city based around its docks from a time when it was often described as the second city of empire due to the volume of trade which passed through the port to the slowdown at the end of the 20th century. By this time, many of the docks had fallen into disuse, but the success of the regeneration of the Albert Dock in the 1980s led the way to Liverpool’s resurgence as a tourist city. The ‘Three Graces’ are beautiful relics from Liverpool’s trading heyday, sitting amongst the more modern developments which are more reflective of the city’s latest incarnation.

The waterfront sits on the River Mersey, navigated by the trade ships of the past and the reason why the port was established here. For most of the last century, the river was heavily polluted, however, it has made a spectacular recovery into a beautiful waterway with many species of fish and sea mammals such as seals and harbour porpoise.

I thought it would be nice to take a drone flight down the river and arrive at the waterfront to see the spectacular buildings from the river. It required a calm day, not common in winter and I was fortunate enough to get a beautiful clear sunny day on 2nd January to do the flight and gather the footage.
