What we see here is yet another Emerson 77648, this time a type SO, dated 1955, the first year for this version of the 77 series. This is the third variation of the 77 to use steel blades and the second where every unit had steel blades. The big change from the previous variation is the larger cage badge, which is made of aluminum instead of bronze. The introduction of the type SO also saw a return to the printed aluminum data tag, which had previously been phased out with the change over from the type AN and AO to the AS and AV in 1949. Another change from previous variations is that the front end bell on this fan is stamped steel instead of the previous generations' cast iron and aluminum. I believe this may also contribute slightly to this version running slightly warmer than previous generations, along with the heavier steel blades. Overall though, it's still a much cooler and more efficient runner than most modern fans at only 0.75 amps on high speed. Of course, like all Emerson 77s, this fan is a quiet runner, and pushes a ton of air. And as with all Emerson portables that use the "unibearing" motor, it is a solidly built fan that runs smoothly and will last forever with proper maintenance. These are some of my absolute favorite oscillating fans and I am always looking for more of them.
