The haunting melody and surreal music video for Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" left many viewers mesmerized and wondering about its deeper meaning when it was released in 1994. This iconic song went on to become one of the defining tracks of the grunge era. In today’s video let’s talk about the history of the song, how it came together, what the lyrics mean and why Chris Cornell thought the song wouldn’t be a mainstream success.
Formed in 1984, Soundgarden were the first of the big four grunge bands to nab a major recording contract when they signed with A&M Records in the late 80’s. They were expected to be the first grunge band to hit it big from Seattle, but Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Nirvana all had platinum records before Soundgarden did.
It was during the 80’s and early 90’s the band went through some lineup changes before finding their classic and most commercially successful lineup ahead of releasing their third record, 1991’s Badmotorfinger. This lineup consisted of Chris Cornell on vocals and guitar, kim thayil on guitar, ben shappard on bass and matt cameron on drums.Badmotorfinger came out on october 8, 1991.two weeks after Nirvana’s Nevermind. In August of 1991, Pearl Jam released their debut record Ten..By January of 92 alternative rock was the hot new thing, nirvana’s nevermind went to number 1 displacing michael jackson and smells like teen spirit peaked at number 6 on the hot 100 chart.. Couple this with several other huge singles for nirvana that year - come as you are, lithium, in bloom and pearl jam’s jeremy, and even flow. Then you had Alice in Chains dark masterpiece Dirt come out in late 1992 giving the band the biggest record of their career with several massive singles Would, Rooster, Them Bones, Angry Chair and Down in a Hole.
By comparison to their fellow Seattle bands, Badmotorfinger was a slow burn. While Alice in Chains Dirt went platinum in 3 months, it took Badmotorfinger 2 years to achieve the same milestone. The album stalled at number 39 on the billboard chart, and they only had one charting single in america in outshined which peaked at numbre 45 on the US Mainstream Rock chart. Things probably weren’t helped by the fact that jesus christ pose was banned by mtv for it’s religious imagery.
I do want to point out that there seems to be this narrative that I don’t necessarily agree with that Kurt Cobain’s death in April of 94 signalled the end of grunge - i mean if you look at the charts and releases that came out in the wake of his death or just before his death - , soundgarden, pearl jam and alice in chains all had #1 records months or even years after KURT died. Granted Soundgarden’s record Superuknown came out a month before Kurt died but the members themselves admit in the book grunge is dead that even though it sold 6 million copies in America, it was over long period of time. Then Pearl Jam releasd vitalogy by late 94 with no music videos on mtv, selling close to a million copes in it’s first week. Then a year later alice in chains release their self titled record which went number 1, despite not really touring behind it for almost half a year later. I’d say grunge was probably more on a slow death than abrupt one like some make it seem.
By the time Soundgarden had started work on Superunknown in 1993,Here was a lot of expectations from their label that his forthcoming album was going to be the group’s breakout hit.l. The label suggested working with producer michael beinhorn whose credits included red hot chili peppers, violent femmes and soul asylum. Up until this point the band had mostly co-produced their albums along with Pantera producer Terry Date both of whom didn’t really give teh band any suggestions.

So the group was initially a little hesitant and very protective of bringing an outsider who was going to make comments on modifying their songs.
