Hundred Boys Celebrating with Songs Scroll, traditionally attributed to the Song Dynasty painter Su Hanchen, is a colored scroll painting on silk. The main painting measures 30.5 × 230 cm and is currently housed in the National Palace Museum, Taipei (accession number: Gu Hua 001452). The scroll features a preface inscribed "Bai Zi Huan Ge" (Hundred Boys Celebrating with Songs) by Wen Peng of the Ming Dynasty, and bears numerous seals of successive collectors, including "Seal of Wen Zhengming", "Xiang Molin's Appreciation Seal", and "Tianlai Pavilion Seal", documenting its transmission history.
As a classic example of "baby play paintings" (Yingxi Tu), the work uses garden rocks and flowers of four seasons as backdrops to connect scenes of over a hundred children at play. Though titled "Hundred Boys", the character "hundred" is a general term meaning "many", embodying the auspicious wish of "abundant offspring and good fortune". The children engage in diverse activities: swinging, riding bamboo horses, playing chess, fishing, fighting crickets, pouring water on Buddha statues, and playing with rabbits. A notable scene shows children performing "meat puppetry" in front of a rockery, accompanied by gongs and drums—academically recognized as one of the earliest visual records of "stringless puppetry". Seasonal flowers (peach, lotus, chrysanthemum, plum blossom) interspersed in the background complement the children's games, implying the blessing of "perpetual spring".
In terms of artistic technique, the painting inherits Su Hanchen's typical style: using "ancient floating silk lines" (Gaogu Yousi Miao) to outline clothing with smooth precision, then layering colors like lapis lazuli and cinnabar for a rich yet elegant effect, exemplifying the meticulous standards of Song court painting (Yuantihua). The details are exquisitely rendered: over ten styles of children's hairstyles (e.g., "sparrow-hawk horns", "branding-mark cut") are depicted with precision, and children's clothing (short jackets, belly bands, hoods) is diverse. These details correspond with historical records in texts like Dongjing Meng Hua Lu (Dreams of Splendor in the Eastern Capital), making the scroll invaluable visual material for studying Song Dynasty folk customs and children's lives. It should be noted that contemporary research suggests this scroll is more likely a Ming Dynasty work emulating Su Hanchen's style, continuing the artistic essence of Song Dynasty baby play paintings.
