Big Thunder Mountain Railroad invites guests to climb aboard a runaway train and plunge into a bat-filled cavern before ascending the first lift hill through stalactite-lined caves. The ride picks up speed as you dive through dark tunnels, dodge falling boulders, and swoop around jagged canyons. Highlights include the famous bleating goat with dynamite and the explosive finale where dynamite ignites the final drop. The Big Thunder Mountain journey ends with a scenic roll past the historic ghost town of Rainbow Ridge, a tribute to the former Rainbow Caverns Mine Train attraction.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad opened at Disneyland Park in 1979, making it the first version of the ride. In 2014, The Big Thunder Railroad underwent a major refurbishment that included new track, updated trains, and an enhanced dynamite explosion effect on the third lift hill.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is available at other Disney parks around the world. At Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris, the attraction is called Big Thunder Mountain.
