Just outside the rolling hills of Decorah Iowa, sits one of the long forgotten gems of the Driftless Region. If you are an avid fly fisherman, this will be an accomplishment you can wear proudly when in the company of other accomplished anglers. South Pine Creek would be fairly similar to a lot of the other creeks in the Iowa Driftless if it were not for a few key factors. The first factor would be that the creek is a mile plus hike back into this secluded valley tucked away from any and all development. So it does not see much angling pressure purely because of the “long” hike. The second and most important factor would be that this little stream holds the only known population of genetically pure of Eastern Brook Trout in all of Iowa. These little char are genetically unique to this region and have been here since the last ice age. Another really cool thing to think about is that they are the furthest western population of their historic native range. They have minute differences that make them superbly adapted for their Driftless environment. They are truly an evolutionary champion to still be around and thriving in today's conditions.
IF you decide to test your skills against these sneaky meadow munchers, please check up on your regulations. The Iowa DNR has gone to great lengths to study as well as protect this genetically pure population of brookies. There is an abundance of public land available so enjoy exploring this valley forgotten by time and enjoy catching a piece of history!
