For nearly two years, we worked alongside local partners to support three community centers and kitchens in Toretsk, a strategic mining town in eastern Ukraine. When Ukrainian defensive lines collapsed in June 2024, we found ourselves coordinating one of the war's most perilous civilian evacuation operations.
With deep community ties that few humanitarian organizations possessed in Toretsk, we immediately launched emergency evacuation efforts. This video captures the stark reality of civilian rescue operations in active combat zones—the life-or-death decisions made in seconds, the ever-present danger, and the unwavering commitment to save lives when military defenses crumble.
The story continues at a shelter in Druzhkivka, where evacuees, torn from their homes, found refuge. The shelter is run by Sveta, our partner, who was herself displaced from Bakhmut. Despite her own losses, she and her dedicated team work relentlessly to provide safety, recovery support, and eventual resettlement assistance for the most vulnerable populations still remaining in the northern Donetsk region.
