Two Weeks Until Your Personal Tax Return is Due

If you were filing in the US your personal income tax return would be due today. However, since all things are better in Canada we have two extra weeks to file our returns. Having said that, there are some troubles in Canada Revenue Agency land this year.

A lot of the T4/T5/T3 slips that we would expect to see on the CRA site are not there due to processing problems. CRA introduced some new verification procedures this year, with limited success. This means that you have to be vigilant when you are putting your tax information together to be sure you are providing your tax preparer with all of the forms.

In the old days we did not have download capability, so all slips had to be entered manually. This year, if you don’t submit a T slip to your tax preparer it is possible that your income will not be recorded because CRA does not have the slip available for download. We have gotten used to relying on CRA to have all the slips, but this year we need to check for ourselves.
