Praise be to our Lord Jesus Christ
The theme of the second Sunday in ordinary time, Year A, is the vocation of the Christian. We are reminded that our vocation is an extension of the vocation of Jesus Christ. The first reading from Prophet Isaiah chapter 49 portrays the Lord God choosing a servant who will bring salvation and be a light to the nations.
Our responsorial Psalm for consideration, attributed to David, revolves around the theme of surrendering to the will of God. The Psalmist, seemingly facing a problem, prayed to the Lord, patiently waited, and witnessed God answering his prayer, leading to rejoicing. Building on this experience, he willingly dedicates himself to serve the Lord.
He acknowledges that the Lord's primary interest lies not in the old testament sacrifices of slaughtered animals, agricultural produce offerings, burnt offerings, or even sacrifices for the atonement of sin. Instead, God values our obedience to His word and will. God finds delight in individuals who willingly submit to His will and serve Him as bond-servants.
Certainly, as human beings, various things delight us – time spent with family, satisfying meals, successful investments, new job opportunities, and more. As Christians, what truly brings us delight? Can we resonate with the psalmist's words – that we find delight in doing God's will? Do we yearn to encounter God through the reading of His word, and is His law or instruction deeply rooted in our hearts, guiding our actions?
Do we actively proclaim God's justice to others, or do we remain silent? Are we dedicated to sharing the Gospel of the Lord with those around us?
Psalm 40 is fundamentally a prophetic psalm, ultimately fulfilled through Jesus Christ, who became the obedient and devoted bond-servant of God the Father. He found joy in fulfilling God's will, proclaimed the Good News of God's salvation, and ultimately served as the ultimate sacrifice for the world's sins. God the Father proclaimed Jesus as His beloved Son in whom He found delight.
May we steadfastly adhere to the word of God, willingly surrendering ourselves and finding joy in serving the Lord through our interactions with our fellow human beings. Let us remember that our strength comes not from ourselves but from Jesus, who empowers us for His singular glory.
May we daily declare – "Here I am, Lord, to do your will."
