On a lovely autumn afternoon this walk is along a section of the beautiful Bridgewater Canal at Lymm in Cheshire, England. The water was busy today with many canal boats passing through and lots of wildlife including 2 beautiful swans. The delightful cottages and homes that line the waterway along with the bright splashes of autumn colours in yellows, oranges and reds made this a beautiful part of the canal to walk today. Construction started on the canal in 1759 with the full route taking more than 35 years to complete. This section opened in 1763 and is known as a 'contour canal' because it keeps the same level along its length without the need for locks. It was built by the Duke of Bridgewater and his engineers to transport coal from his mines. Other goods being transported on the canal followed including crops, cloth and nightsoil (a polite phrase for human excrement) which, before sewer systems were developed, was collected from the city and transported to rural areas to be deposited on farmer's fields! Around the 1960's the canal started to become what it is today and is now owned by the Manchester Ship Canal in conjunction with the Bridgewater Canal Trust.
