Following the death of Tchaikovsky, the Romantic tradition in Russia was triumphantly sustained by Rachmaninov and Scriabin, leaving the twin leading lights of Stravinsky and Prokofiev to adopt more divergent musical paths. Prokofiev's Fifth and final Piano Concerto (1931-2) was his last major work to be composed in Paris before his gradual reintroduction into Soviet Russia via such masterpieces as Lieutenant Kijé and the ballet Romeo and Juliet. His original intention was for a non-virtuoso work entitled 'Music for Piano', although the performing side of his nature soon got the better of him as it spiralled into a five movement, fully-fledged concerto. Its suitelike nature and delight in quixotic changes of mood more reminiscent of the ballet theatre make it one of the composer's most immediately attractive concertante works.
