Here are a few common contributors that can look like plantar fasciitis or keep it from improving:
Low back involvement: Sometimes nerve irritation or mobility problems in the low back can refer symptoms into the foot. If the origin isn’t local, only treating the foot may not stick.
Foot and toe muscle function: If the intrinsic foot muscles aren’t doing their job well, the plantar fascia may get overloaded, creating true plantar fasciitis symptoms.
Calf strength and endurance (and even calf size): Prior ankle sprains, fractures, time in a walking boot, or recurring injuries can leave one calf weaker or smaller—changing how the ankle and foot absorb force and increasing strain on the plantar fascia.
The key takeaway: pain relief matters, but assessment is the game-changer. When you identify whether the driver is the back, the foot, the calf, or a combination, you can match care and rehab to what your body actually needs.
