Videographer and marine biologist Daniel Opitz films humpback whales in Hawaii and studies their remarkably complex songs, produced mainly by males underwater. Along the way, he meets scientists, activists, and politicians working to protect these animals.
For decades, whales have sparked international conflict between conservationists and whaling nations. Intensive hunting in the 19th and 20th centuries brought many species to the brink of extinction, and although populations are slowly recovering under the 1986 moratorium, whaling quotas continue to rise and the treaty is often ignored.
