Door Walcheren

The documentary Door Walcheren (Through Walcheren) consists of four short films. The first is a portrait of Middelburg, with special attention paid to the history of the city and its traditions such as ‘tilting at the ring’. The most important buildings, streets, and squares are shown. Of note are the many women in traditional Zeeland costume.

The other films show Veere, the coast of Walcheren, and the Westkapelle, with its distinctive lighthouse and seawall. This seawall was bombed by the British on October 3, 1944, leading to the drowning of about 150 of the village’s inhabitants. Eighty percent of Westkapelle was destroyed as a result of the bombing, the flooding of Walcheren, and the fighting after the Allied landing.

1. Portret van Middelburg, met speciale aandacht voor de geschiedenis van de stad en tradities als het ringsteken. De belangrijkste gebouwen, straten en pleinen worden getoond. Opvallend zijn de vele vrouwen in Zeeuwse klederdracht.
De overige films tonen 2. Veere, 3. de Walcherse kust en 4. Westkapelle, met zijn karakteristieke vuurtoren en zeedijk. Deze zeedijk werd op 3 oktober 1944 door de Britten gebombardeerd, waardoor ongeveer honderdvijftig inwoners van het dorpje zijn verdronken. Tachtig procent van Westkapelle werd vernield als gevolg van het bombardement, de inundatie van Walcheren en de gevechten na de geallieerde landing.
