I spent untold hours of my teen years in record stores in Hollywood and Santa Monica California.
Time seemed to stop in there.
It wasn’t unusual for me to get there early and be there until it closed up at night. These shops were always an adventure hunting through bins and discovering music. This is something eBay, Amazon, and the internet...simply can't replicate.
There was an anticipation, days & weeks or build-up, with no price shopping or haggling. In fact, people didn’t look at high pricing as a bad thing… it only made us enjoy the items all the more, brag about the purchases, and want to go back as soon as we could to spend more.
There are people alive today that have never known the joy of shopping for music at a cool record store.
When the iPod came out, I made a pivot to digital.
But looking back all these years, I slightly regret this. Having my albums was so much more of an experience. Once I got those records home and dropped the needle. I’d go to another world.
Zeppelin
The Beatles
The Stones.
Awww the nostalgia…
After years of playing along with these records, I discovered something… 99.9999% of my favorite albums (the ones from the last 100+ years of popular American music) all have ONE THING in common.
What is it?
The blues.
In fact, if you were to walk around any cool music shop, pick up any record at random, and give it a spin. You’d find the fundamental principles of blues are the bedrock. After I figured this out, everything changed. I could learn songs faster, jam with others better, and music as a whole got easier.
