Lana Mitchell stood at the entrance of the imposing glass tower in downtown Boston, her fingers tightening around the straps of her purse. The morning sun reflected off the building's surface, temporarily blinding her—an omen, perhaps, for what awaited inside. She took a deep breath, smoothed down her second-hand navy blazer, and pushed through the revolving door.
"First day jitters are normal," she whispered to herself as the elevator climbed to the thirty-second floor. "You need this job, Lana. You can do this."
The elevator doors opened to reveal the sleek reception area of Whitford & Associates, one of the most prestigious law firms in the country. The receptionist, a poised woman with perfectly styled hair, looked up with a practiced smile.
"Lana Mitchell for Mr. Whitford," Lana said, trying to keep her voice steady.
"Ah, the new secretary." The woman's eyes gave Lana a quick assessment. "Right this way. He's expecting you."
As they walked through the corridors, Lana felt the weight of curious glances from associates and paralegals. Everyone seemed impossibly polished, like they'd stepped out of a legal drama. Lana had spent the last of her savings on this outfit, but still felt hopelessly underdressed.
