GRANDPA MAD | Peter and the Wolf, Sergei Prokofiev Excerpt

This week’s #excerpt features one of our more prominent excerpts from Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. The bassoon depicts one of the main characters of the story, Peter’s ornery grandfather.

🎶 Without getting too into the weeds with the story here, Peter has ventured into an area his grandfather has forbid him from and now, with his best interest at heart, Grandfather comes stomping out and takes him home. This moment, and this entire work at large, are wonderful examples of music telling a narrative and elevating text/film! At first glance, the repeated F-sharp to G and E-sharp to F-sharp at the end of the excerpt may seem odd, silly, or confusing, but the narrator or performer who presents the story elements to the audience uses it to bring life to the story! My favorite interpretation is that Grandfather has gathered Peter up, and each gesture is him stomping back to the house (the stuttering red bar shows this a bit here).
